John Carradine was one of the most familiar of all character actors; he enjoyed a long and prosperous career in films, theatre and television. Tall, gaunt and dark with beady piercing eyes, he seemed a menacing figure especially with his booming, resounding voice. In films he played mostly character roles and quite solidly. For a brief time he billed himself as Peter Richmond and John Peter Richmond. While J. Carrol Naish, an Irishman was best known for playing Latin, Arab, and East Indian characters. Naish played virtually every ethnic type in movies, including blacks and Orientals-but almost never an Irishman! |
