Ray could use an ordinary plot, a handful of locations and a few moderately successful artists and yet come up with a thrilling cinematic adventure. Ray was a true master of low budget murder mysteries and Westerns in the 30s and 40s. Going by Ray?s reputation, "I?ll Name The Murderer", seems to have been produced in a moment of rare generosity - for he has been lavish in the use of locales, employed an army of artists and based this narrative on a fabulously crafted plot, all of which adds up to the making of one of his best cinematic undertakings. Based on a strange murder mystery, the plot unfolds quite rapidly with the showy gossip columnist Tilton leading the Police Captain Flynn, a private eye Lou Baron and the audience on, through a series of bold guesses and clever lies. Tilton uses his column to smoke out the real culprit and save his pal Ted from the chair. Few, if any, among the audience are likely to unclench their fists or stop biting their fingernails till they discover who had killed the ladies - and that happens just before the screen goes blank!
