Six famous authors worked on his idea to produce this story, which was later adapted for the screen by Lester Cole. U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt once wondered whether a man could disappear mysteriously and take his wealth with him. The magazine editor, to whom he was speaking, took up the challenge and the result was one of the most engaging mystery movies of the '30s. The story of a man, who is more successful at practicing law than in his marriage, may sound familiar, but his actions after deciding that he had had enough are definitely unheard of. Blake's decision to sell stock and invest in a Cannery on the verge of shutting down will raise many an eyebrow among today's businessmen. Yet, Blake manages to earn the kind of dividend that shares and bonds do not always promise. The plight of citizens driven to poverty by the shutting down of the factory is shown with a great deal of sensitivity and is emotionally moving. Blake's transformation to Carter too is portrayed imaginatively. The plot attains a furious pace toward the end when gangsters and citizens fight for possession of the cannery. The selection of locations is done cleverly and the choice of a frontier town gives the story a realistic touch. This movie will always be remembered for two reasons - first, that it is credited to President Roosevelt and second it has an unusual plot.
