Product Description : The 1870 US Atlas CD is very important historical document. In 1870 vast historical forces were at work. The Civil War was over and America?s expansion into the west was reaching its apex. At the same time, new scientific methods were being embraced for representing statistics in graphical formats that anyone could understand. For that reason, the Census of 1870 became an important opportunity to create a comprehensive guide to where the United States was in its path to Manifest Destiny. Just a note: these are not just low quality photo reproductions of these maps. The CD includes the Mr. Sid Viewer which allows the user to focus in on the smallest detail of each and every rare map on display. It feels like you are studying them with a magnifying glass at the most important library in the world. Superintendent of the Census Francis A. Walker decided to use the information the government had gathered from its citizens to create a folio that would provide a portrait of the United States in one comprehensive volume. Walker called upon the services of the newly formed American Geographical Society and the American Statistical Society to create the first United States atlas ever compiled. Walker recruited the most important scientists of the land, including Daniel C. Gilman of Yale University, Samuel B. Ruggles of the American Geographical Society, and Edward Jarvis of the American Statistical Association.
