Antique Maps of The United States - Louisiana CD: Antique Maps of The United States Louisiana CD |
| Product Description : The magical state of Louisiana is blessed geographically - and apparently jinxed historically since it was first discovered by the Spanish in 1519. Located in the southeastern United States, within the Gulf Coastal Plain, it is bordered by Mississippi on the east, the Gulf of Mexico on the south, Texas on the west, and Arkansas on the north. Its inhabitants seem to have distilled a unique sense of laissez faire from the endless stream of political powers that claimed their State for themselves. The population, now as in its earliest recorded history, consists of the original Indian inhabitants, the descendants of a variety of settlers as well as French, Spanish, English, German, Acadians, West Indians, Africans, Irish and Italians. It was originally the Spanish who built what is now known as the French Quarter of New Orleans. Various ?keywords' come to mind when Louisiana is mentioned - Mardi Gras, plantation, slaves, bayou, moonshine whiskey, the Blues, priests, pirates, Creoles, steamboats... it is a bit of all these, but a lot more. It is a cultural melting pot that countenances a bewildering international presence. The French, Slavs, Germans, Italians and Irish rub shoulders with Native American Cajuns and apparently see nothing strange in it. To trace the roots of such an accommodating cultural climate, it is necessary to go a considerable way back into Louisiana's fascinating history. I had the excellent opportunity to visit the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum in Shreveport a few years ago and carry some lasting impressions with me. These have been remarkable amplified by the vintage maps of this exceptional piece of America featured on the Louisiana Maps CD from A2ZCDS. This collection cannot fail to bring out the explorer in anyone, and I endorse it highly. |
