Early Maps of North America CD: Early Maps of North America CD |
| Product Description : The French entered the war against England on the side of the Americans in 1777 following the Battle of Saratoga, but even before that, they followed the events of the American Revolution very closely. Thus, it is not surprising that there were some excellent maps of North America issued by the French during the early part of the 18th century. The credit for the best mapping of North America from the 1750s on, however, goes to the British. The 89 maps that you will examine in this CD have been selected from the best of French and British sources. These maps record the history of North America in the 18th Century in a charmingly informative manner. Designed by some of the leading surveyors of the times, the maps talk of colonial conquests of Britain, Spain and France and their continual struggle for territorial dominance. Maps of large territories that were occupied by Indians at the time are also included and are storehouses of information on the geographical distribution of American tribes. Viewing these maps was, for me, like reading a history book with each map bearing testimony to an era when the colonies were struggling for an identity of their own. This CD is an extremely informative and exhaustive collection of maps of North America from the 18th century, and is certain to delight students of history with many hours of fruitful investigation. |
