American Suburbia: The New Frontier (2-DVD Set): American Suburbia The New Frontier 2DVD Set |
| Product Description : Clean, spacious, modern, accommodating, progressive and friendly - this is how the cities showcased in the first part of these unique DVDs wish to be remembered. This collection of vintage films presents an interesting look at the '50s and '60s - a significant period in the history of cities in the making. You will see some very interesting clips about Doylestown, Levittown, Redwood, Detroit and New York in this context. The tone throughout is a promotional one as if the cities are inviting people to come and live there. The other message that comes through clearly is that we are proud of our city. Many of the clips are characterized by good photography and intelligent narration with good quality audio. The films on Rochester and Detroit are especially well made with the camera focusing on several attractions the cities offer - good people, good amenities, some fabulous shopping centers and glorious surroundings. In striking contrast, the clips entitled "No Time for Ugliness" dwell on the unfortunate result of rapid modernization - unplanned buildings, hoardings, junk yards, traffic, polluted rivers and litter that mar the city's face. By the mid '60s, urban sprawl was popping its ugly head up in many of America's cities and you couldn't help but notice it. The use of tinted films and subdued narration give the clips a foreboding effect that accentuates the message - our cities have become ugly. This was an America that needed an awakening. |
