American Suburbia: Our Communities DVD: American Suburbia Our Communities DVD |
| Product Description : This amazing collection of footage, partly in color, was shot at a time when young Americans were investing in property in the suburbs and moving away from the concrete jungles that most downtown districts had come to represent. Two themes seem to stand out in these films -first, it takes a lot of planning to ensure that cities run smoothly and second, the suburbs are the place for you to live in. "Arteries Of New York' is a comprehensive documentary on the fabulously organized transport system in the great metropolis. A well-written script, imaginative camera work and a lively narration keep the viewer's interests alive. The tone of this film and the one to follow (Our Community) is purely educational. This is not surprising when you see who the sponsor was- Encyclopedia Britannica!" Our Community" is a slightly overdrawn effort at educating children about how everybody, from the baker to the telephone operator has a role to play in a community. The latter part of the DVD deals with the joys of living in the suburbs - lots of space, your own house, and a host of attractive and well-stocked shopping malls, complete with restaurants. On the flip side are the loneliness and the lack of parental guidance when things get out of hand. These films seem to promote the idea that the newfound haven (the suburb) was the domain of the young. It is amusing to witness the joys of a young housewife discovering the benefits 'modern' gadgets like the freezer and plastic wraps. |
