Historic Travel US-Pennsylvania Marches On (2-DVD): Historic Travel USPennsylvania Marches On 2DVD |
| Product Description : For most parts, this unique set of DVDs presents a cheerful picture of life in Philadelphia and surrounding towns in the '30s when the country was in the grips of the great economic depression. Produced in an effort to give the sagging economy a much-needed boost, the tone in most of these promotional films is upbeat and buoyant. Scenes of thriving businesses in towns around Philadelphia are used to good effect in promoting the notion that all was well and under control. The clips also show how towns sprung up quickly in the post-depression building boom that witnessed the birth of modern suburbs. The irrefutable contribution of the Ford Company to the building industry is also captured in an enthusiastic manner. On the flip side you are presented with a gloomy picture of the poverty, dirt, illness and despair that characterized the slums that sprung up as a result of rapid industrialization in Philadelphia. The Black and white footage of the slums witnessed in A Place To Live evokes sympathy for the unfortunate slum dwellers and the homeless. The film moots the notion that poor city planning and the apathy of concerned authorities responsible for town planning are to be blamed for the pathetic conditions that many were forced to endure and suggests remedial measures to alleviate the situation as well. These DVDs are invaluable in terms of the historic record they preserve. I found the films to be informative as well as entertaining. The overall picture, of Philadelphia and its surrounding towns presented on these DVDs is a vibrant one, and explains why Philadelphia has always been the top choice of millions who chose to make it home. I am certain that these DVDs will provide everybody who has the opportunity to view their contents with a delightful peep at the history of the erstwhile capital of the United States. |
